about cerebral palsy

Cerebral palsy is a term used to describe a group of chronic conditions  affecting body movements and muscle coordination. It is caused by damage  to one or more specific areas of the brain, usually occurring during  fetal development or infancy.  Cerebral palsy occurs before, during or  shortly following birth. "Cerebral" refers to the brain and "Palsy" to a  disorder of movement or posture. If someone has cerebral palsy it means  that because of an injury to their brain (cerebral) they are not able  to use some of the muscles in their body in the normal way (palsy).   Children with cerebral palsy may not be able to walk, talk, eat or play  in the same ways as most other children. That is why living with  cerebral palsy is very difficult. There are things to help people with  cerebral palsy to live a better life, unfortunately this type  of equipment is very expensive.  There are different degrees of cerebral  palsy including mild, moderate and severe but doctors usually classify  types of cerebral palsy according to the type of movement disorder  involved.  Spastic cerebral palsy is when certain muscles are contracted  on a continuous basis (different degrees from mild to severe). This  spasticity or contracted muscles causes tight or stiff muscles and may  make movement, speech and walking impossible or difficult. Spastic  cerebral palsy is the most common type affecting about 70% of cerebral  palsy cases.  Another type of cerebral palsy is called Athetoid cerebral  palsy which is characterized by uncontrollable writhing movements.  Intelligence is almost never affected. This type of cerebral palsy  affects about 20% of cases.  Ataxic cerebral palsy is the rarest type  affecting only about 10% of cases and is characterized by balance and  depth perception issues, low muscle tone plus visual and auditory  problems.  Adam has moderate to severe cerebral palsy of the spastic  type. He needs someone to do almost everything for him. He tries to be  as independent as possible and has a sharp mind. He is able to go out  with the help of access paratransit and could use donations to help pay for  this service.  Adam has this website to educate everyone about cerebral  palsy, so if you would like to help, please visit his donation support page only you can make a difference God bless
